Men charged with setting puppy on fire
Reported by Lori Brown

Two young men are charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty for dousing a three-month-old puppy with gasoline and setting her on fire.

The young German Shepherd mix was playing on Kilarney Street in Whitehaven when Tristan Hathaway and Vincent Boykin set her on fire.

The puppy survived the flames and is now under the care of veterinarians at Memphis Animal Services. She suffered burns to her face, back and all four legs, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Neighbor Jerrica Agnew says she saw Boykin hold the dog while Hathaway set her on fire using a lighter.

Agnew said she smelled gasoline as she tried to saved the animal’s life. “His whole body just lit up in flames.”

Agnew said the puppy rolled in the dirt in an attempt to quench the flames.

“It was crying…doing what dogs do when hurt…hollering,” said Agnew. “I didn’t want to touch it, I knew it’s skin was so…”

New Mississippi RiverKings’ coach Kevin Kaminski continues working to fill out his 2008-09 Central Hockey League roster with the acquisition of center Mike Tuomi. The rights to the 23-year old native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada were acquired from the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and he has now been signed on for the upcoming campaign.

The right-handed shooting Tuomi split time between the Killer Bees and Pensacola of the ECHL last year, with the majority of his time being spent with Rio Grande Valley. In 45 appearances with RGV, Mike scored 11 goals and added 13 assists for 24 points with 37 penalty minutes. Three of Tuomi’s goals were scored on the power play and one was a game-winner. He was third among active players on the RGV roster at the end of the season in shooting percentage at .124.

Mike joined the Killer Bees in December and promptly contributed with assists in his first three games. Tuomi also started the 2008 portion of the season strong with two goals and four points in the first three contests of the New Year.

With Pensacola of the ECHL last season, Tuomi scored three goals and added an assist in 12 games, before being acquired by Rio Grande Valley.

The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League have announced the signing of right-winger Darrell Stoddard to play in the 2008-09 season. The 26-year old Stoddard will be entering his fourth professional season, all with the RiverKings. He becomes the third announced signing under new coach Kevin Kaminski.

In three previous seasons with the RiverKings, Stoddard has scored 37 goals and has 93 points in 180 games. 16 of his 37 goals have come on the power play, one has been shorthanded and four goals were game-winners.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada played in 62 games for the RiverKings last season, scoring six goals and assisting on 14 others for 20 points. Not afraid to mix it up when needed, Stoddard also collected 165 penalty minutes in last season’s campaign, putting him third on the roster in that category.

Half of Darrell’s goal scoring came in the month of December, when he scored three goals and added four assists for a total of seven points. He did the most damage against Corpus Christi last year with one goal and three assists for four points.

Landmesser Signs With Riverkings

The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League have announced the signing of Derek Landmesser for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Landmesser becomes the first signing under new RiverKings’ coach Kevin Kaminski.
This past season with the RiverKings, the native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada played in all 64 regular season games and also in all three playoff contests, totaling 50 points on eight goals and 42 assists during the regular season. In the playoffs, the RiverKings’ team captain chipped in a pair of assists as the Kings were eliminated in the first round by Texas in three games.

Landmesser began his CHL career with the Memphis RiverKings in the 2000-01 season, scoring seven goals and 41 assists for 48 points, then adding two goals and seven points in the playoffs. After a year with Muskegon (2001-02, UHL), Derek returned to Memphis to become an integral part of a 2002-03 championship campaign.

Dumont Signs With RiverKings

(Southaven, MS) — A key figure in the Mississippi RiverKings’ run to the Central Hockey League playoffs last season has signed on for another campaign. Center Louis Dumont has agreed to be a part of the RiverKings as he begins his 15th professional season and third year in the Mid-South.
A native of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound forward played in all 64 regular season games for the RiverKings last season. Dumont was fourth on the RiverKings’ stat sheet in points with 51 and his 35 assists ranked him third on the team in that category. Dumont added three assists in the Kings playoff series with Texas last year.

Dumont was good when it counted for the RiverKings, as six of his 16 goals last year came as game-winners, putting him third on the roster in that category. Louis also contributed in each of the last four crucial games of the regular season, as he scored two goals and added two assists in the push for the RiverKings’ spot in the CHL post-season. All four games were RiverKings’ victories.
